A customer asked me earlier in the year if I could show her how to work the V-Stitch. I’d never heard of it! So I quickly Googled it and discovered a wonderful stitch to use for making blankets. Since then I’ve had a customer ask if they could use it for a scarf, of course they can!
Now as I have a coffee shop that sells yarn I have a lot of regular customers who bring their work in with them and sit and chat. Knitting and crochet are very contagious! So when someone is making something I often find others will want to have a go too. So the scarf was seen, others made it and a couple of weeks ago the request came for some wristwarmers. Once made a further request came for a hat. So today’s offering is a triple – wristwarmers and matching hat both in aran weight Drops Nepal and also a scarf in superchunky Drops Andes all worked using the V-Stitch
Wristwarmers
I’ve used the lovely Purple Mix 4434
5mm hook
Drops Nepal 50g or other suitable aran yarn (75m/82yd)
Abbreviations
ch – chain
tr – treble (US dc – double crochet)
st – stitch
Ch 30
Row 1: ch3 (represents 1tr and 1 ch), 1tr into 4th ch from hook, miss 2 st, *(1tr, 1ch, 1tr) into next st* repeat from * to * to end of row. Join to 2nd ch of 3 with sl st. (8 V-spaces)
Row 2: ch3 (represents 1tr and 1 ch), 1tr into first V-space, *(1tr, 1ch, 1tr) into next V space* repeat from * to * to end of row. Join with sl st to 2nd ch of 3 at beginning of row. (8 V-spaces)
Repeat row 2 until you have worked 14 rows.
Break off yarn. Working from the top, sew the first 3cm closed. Fasten off. Leave 4cm open and then sew from here to bottom of wristwarmer.
Make 2nd wristwarmer to match.
Hat
The photo shows Powder Pink 3112
5mm hook
Drops Nepal 100g or other suitable aran yarn (150m/ 164yrds)
Abbreviations
ch – chain
htr – half treble (US hdc – half double)
tr – treble (US dc – double crochet)
trdec – treble dec – work the first part of treble, keeping 2 loops on hook work next treble as far as final part, pull through all 3 loops.
st – stitch
BAND
Ch 10
Foundation Row: ch2 (acts as 1tr), 1tr in back loop of 4th ch from hook, work 1tr into the back loop of every st to end of ch. Turn (10sts)
Row 1: ch2, 1tr in back loop of 2nd st, 1tr in back loop of each st to end.
Repeat Row 1 until you have worked 32 rows.
Place the 2 short ends together and join using the slip stitch method.
Crown
With right side facing, join to the top edge using a sl st. Ch 2, pick up and work (44) htr around the edge of the band. Join with a sl st.
Round 1: ch3, 1tr into same st, *miss 1 st, (1tr, 1ch, 1tr) into next st* rpt to end of round. Join with a sl st. (68sts)
Round 2: ch 3, 1tr into 1ch sp, (1tr, 1ch, 1tr) into each 1 ch space to end. Join with a sl st.
Repeat round 2, 6 times.
Next round: ch 2, work 1tr into each tr AND each ch, until 15 tr worked, 1 trdec, *1tr into next 15tr, 1trdec* to end of round. Join with a sl st (4 decreases – 64sts)
Next round: ch2, 1tr into next 5sts, trdec across next 2 sts, *1tr into next 6 sts, trdec across next 2sts* repeat to end of round. Join with sl st. (8 decreases – 56sts)
Next round: ch2, 1tr into next 4sts, trdec across next 2 sts, *1tr into next 5 sts, trdec across next 2sts* repeat to end of round. Join with sl st. (8 decreases – 48sts)
Next round: ch2, 1tr into next 3sts, trdec across next 2 sts, *1tr into next 4 sts, trdec across next 2sts* repeat to end of round. Join with sl st. (8 decreases – 40sts)
Next round: ch2, 1tr into next 2sts, trdec across next 2 sts, *1tr into next 3 sts, trdec across next 2sts* repeat to end of round. Join with sl st. (8 decreases – 32sts)
Next round: ch2, 1tr into next st, trdec across next 2 sts, *1tr into next 2 sts, trdec across next 2sts* repeat to end of round. Join with sl st. (8 decreases – 24sts)
Next round: ch2, trdec across next 2 sts, repeat to end of round. Join with sl st. (12 decreases – 12sts)
Break off yarn leaving a long tail end. Fasten off last st and then using the tail end weave through the sts. Pull tight to close.
Weave in all ends.
Finally add a pompom or tassel to the top of the hat.
Chunky Scarf
This scarf has been worked in Sea Green 7130
6mm hook
Drops Andes 200g or other suitable chunky yarn (180m/210yds)

ch – chain
tr – treble (US dc – double crochet)
st – stitch
Ch 28
Foundation Row: ch2, 1tr in 3rd ch from hook, miss 1 ch, (1tr, 1ch, 1tr) into next st* repeat from * to * to last 2 ch. 1 tr in each st. Turn
Row 1: ch2, 1tr in next st, miss 1 st, *(1tr, 1ch, 1tr) into next V space* repeat from * to * to last 2 sts. 1 tr in each of last 2 sts.
Repeat row 1 until the scarf is the desired length. Fasten off the end and sew in any loose threads.
The scarf in the diagram has been sewn along the short ends to form a cosy cowl.
